Hi guys!
During our American trip, we arrived again in California, where we started our road trip. When we hear California, we think of surfing, right? So that is exactly what we did! We got up to the Airbnb site, we looked for surfing experience and there we go! We found Micah and that’s how we got started!
Let’s not rush into things, let us start at the beginning. All proud and big we both felt, we wanted to go surfing on our own. Knowing that we don’t have any experience and never even touched a surfboard, we would probably fail in the attempt… A surf instructor is an option as well, but that was WAY out of our budget! For one hour, it would cost us 200 dollars, which is just ridiculous for us, because we didn’t even know if we were going to like it. Ief knew that Airbnb was also for finding experiences, so we thought we could have a look.
BINGO. We found Micah in Santa Barbara and we just went for it.
When arriving in his apartment, we got our own wetsuit and we could choose a board. After installing everything in and on the car, grabbed some water, towels, dry clothes and everything else, WE GOT TO THE BEACH.
At first, Britt thought it would be cold in the sea, lots of falling down, lots of paddling and waiting, but DAMN. Time just goes fast when surfing on the waves and we didn’t even feel the cold.
After some practice on the beach and some technical stuff, we got out there. Like really on the sea. We paddled our way through the first waves and wow… our arms were like… d.e.a.d. Once you got through the first waves, it felt easier to paddle further down. Micah told us when to paddle, when to turn to/from the wave, when to stand on the board (and surf LOL). So everything went kinda guud, until Ief hit a rock in the sea with his foot… 2 big (and bloody) cuts were visible and the blood just flooded out. He had to sit on the beach for a while due to the pain (and tiredness).
In the meantime, BRITT WENT FOR IT AND CAUGHT 5 BIG WAVES! While writing it now, it doesn’t seem a big deal, but she stood on her board for 10 seconds (quite long if you count to ten right now) and she had those waves! Ief eventually went into the water again and practiced some of his skills as well.
Time flies and it was already time to go back, because our experience was over…
All in all, the surfers life seems pretty cool and relax, but the surfing itself isn’t a hobby we would like to have forever. It was a very good experience we had and now we at least know how it feels to surf (a little) and maybe one day (or during our trip) we can go out there on our own and try it again!
Micah helped us very well and he really knows the skills of the surfing. Thanks again for being so patient with us!
Time for some more adventures.
See ya soon!
