Globe Watchers in AmsterDAMN

Hi there!

You all know the city with the little streets, the canals with the boats and the bridges… (NOT Venice). Amsterdam! Or as I like to call it: AmsterDAMN.

This capital of the Netherlands was indeed our next destination! There will follow a video soon on our YouTube Channel with all our activities: https://bit.ly/2xSm0EF

I will already give you an overview of everything we did!

First of all, I will start with our accommodation. We didn’t sleep in a hotel (I can hear you think, where the hell did you sleep?). Well, we tried an AirBNB for the first time as a couple! It felt adventurous and scary at first, but all in all, everything turned out just fine. We choose a floating home (sounds exciting, right?). Basically, it was a house on the water. If it was very windy, we could feel the house move! (Okay, I’m maybe exaggerating).

Everybody knows that you can do LOADS of things in Amsterdam. Everybody, whatever kind of taste you have in food, activities, culture… you can always do that in Amsterdam. No matter what. The Netherlands is known for its cheese, tullips, Kibbeling, clogs… and many more!

Let me categorise everything.

Food lover? LIT-ER-AL-LY every kind of food is available in Amsterdam. Italian, Chinese, Belgian, Libanese, Japanese, Greek, Turkish …. Food! Amsterdam also has a lot of food ‘specialties’. Typical of Amsterdam is Kibbeling, we also ate that! It’s fried fish that is eaten with a Tartar sauce. Definitely worth trying! If you want to taste the best Kibbeling, go to one of the little stalls on the streets!

(It was raining, hence the jacket with the hood)

Besides that, there are a lot of delicious foods as well in The Netherlands. One of the other famous ‘food dishes’ is cheese. There’re hundreds of cheese shops containing thousand different flavours. Think of a flavour and they sell it. Don’t look for a cheese shop, believe me… I’m sure you’ll pass one.

Culture lover? If you’re a real culture minded person, there are tons of activities for you! Museum fan? You can basically choose between every topic. There is the most famous museum: Het Rijksmuseum, imposing building with great art, like the work of Rembrandt. Besides this one, there is also a bag museum, a cheese museum (which we visited ofcourse), the NEMO Museum, Madame Tussauds (you know, the statues of famous people, made of wax) and even a torture museum…

The most famous culture point in Amsterdam is the ‘Anne Frank Museum’. Anne was a Jewish girl during the Second World War and she kept a diary about her situation. In the museum/house, you’ll go completely into her story!

As you read, you visited the cheese museum. Definitely worth doing! You can taste a lot of weird cheeses and you can learn about the progress of making cheese.

(You could also take selfies in the Cheese Museum, SAY CHEESE! Get it?)

Nature lover? When we are on a trip, we prefer to have a mix between indoor activities, outdoor sightseeing and food (especially the food ofcourse). Amsterdam is a city, but there are also a lot of nice outdoor nature activities. The most famous one is Vondelpark. A huge, green and beautiful park! Basically, it’s the Central Park of Amsterdam.

A famous courtyard in Amsterdam is Begijnhof. There is a beautiful little church surrounded with the cosiest houses ever! The Begijnhof is the only inner court in Amsterdam which was founded during the Middle Ages and I can write a thousand words here… but you’ll have to see it with your own eyes to feel the cosy vibes there! On the photos here, you can already see a first impression.

Shop lover? (Actually, this is not a question). There are a lot of shop opportunities in Amsterdam. In a huge city, there need to be huge shopping opportunities, right? You have the big shopping streets, Kalverstraat, with many shops for all kinds of shoppers. Next to that, there is the famous ‘Bijenkorf’ (literally translated: bee hive) It’s a huge shopping building with different shops in it!

Prefer to shop food? Then the ‘Foodhallen’ are perfect for you! It’s the first indoor foodmarket in the Netherlands. Besides food, there is also a big flower market! GREAT TO SURPRISE YOUR PARTNER WITH A BOUQUET! (Do you think Ief understood the hint?).

Modern lover? No matter how gorgeous the old city of Amsterdam is, the modern side is also worth seeing. Behind Amsterdam Central (the train station) you can take a free ferry which crosses the river and then you can visit the Eye Film Museum and A’dam Tower. This tower is amazing! If you go all the way up, you can see a beautiful skyline of Amsterdam. It’s called Amsterdam Lookout.

To visit all these spots, we used our feet in combination with the tram. There was a tram stop right in front of our AirBNB accommodation, so we took the tram to go to the centre. No matter where you want to go, you can just take the tram and you can go anywhere! If you take a day pass, you only pay €7,5. We also payed for a hop on/hop off boat. In this way, we made a boat trip AND we could go to places. Win-win situation! You can also pay for this boat in combination with other tickets to get a discount. We took the boat in combo with the ticket for A’dam Tower, but it’s also possible to take discount tickets for the hop on/hop off bus, Madame Tussauds, Het Rijksmuseum… and many more!

Amsterdam is a big city and I’m sure that everybody feels welcome there. Everybody is friendly, you can fill a whole weekend without getting boring and the foooood is gooood.

If you guys are planning to go to Amsterdam, feel free to drop us an email at contact.globewatchers@gmail.com or to send us a DM on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter! We would love to help!

See you next time!
