Globe Watchers in Cologne

Bijgewerkt op: 15 nov 2018

Guten Tag everyone!

Nice to know you’re still reading our adventures! The next trip we did was to Cologne, Germany. Most people know the city as Keulen or Köln. Soon, there will be a video of our trip with all the activities we did. Make sure you subscribe to our YouTube Channel if you don’t want to miss a video: https://bit.ly/2zlPmeD

So, Cologne! We were not sure about this city at first. What in the world can you visit in Cologne? While we were checking everything, it became clear that Cologne is beautiful! We booked our hotel through a coupon of Libelle. Now and then, Libelle (a magazine in Belgium) has these amazing offers to stay in a (expensive) hotel, but with a coupon.

We stayed at Clostermannshof, a small 25 minutes from the city centre of Cologne. We went to Cologne centre by car every day. We parked at the Q-Park DuMont Carré, where we could park the car a whole day for only €10 on Saturday and €7 on Sunday (Definitely do that, it’s in the middle of the centre!)

(Our hotel room, with the bottle of cava we got!)

We visited a lot in Cologne! Let’s give you a short summary (A detailed overview, you will get in the video!). The first thing we definitely recommend is the Kölntriangle Viewpoint. You go up in a building to the 28th floor and when you’re up there, you will see the most beautiful view you can get of Cologne. You can see the Cathedral, the skyline, … EVERYTHING!

Speaking of that view, the first thing that will catch your eye will be the Cathedral. THE cathedral of Cologne, the Kölner Dom. It’s the most famous landmark of Cologne and it’s the tallest twin-spired church (Don’t think I know these things, ‘cause I don’t. Thank Wikipedia.).

In that view of Cologne, next to the cathedral you’ll see a HUGE bridge (with a thousand trains that pass by, literally. Wikipedia told me.) That bridge is the Hohenzollern Bridge, the most heavily used railway bridge in Germany. Quite impressive to walk on that bridge! I would say the view on the bridge, together with the trains passing by is a wonderful thing! But the whole bridge is full of love lock. It's cute that people still do that, and also beautiful to see all those colours together!

The thing that amazed us the most were the colourful houses in Cologne! In every alley we went, there were different houses with different colours. B-E-A-UTIFUL. It was too bad that the sky was so grey, because otherwise our photos would have been more colourful.

About the food in Germany… we’re just going to be honest. We’re not going to lie about that. We’re not a huge fan of the German cuisine. Basically, it’s a lot of meat, which is fine! But I’m (Britt) not a huge fan of it. The only German thing we ate were Rösti (is that even German?) and Flammkuchen. We read a lot of other (good) reviews of other German dishes, but we couldn’t take the risk. Sorry guys, to know more about the German food, you’ll have to go yourself…

Other nice things to do in Germany are the Schildersgasse (a big shopping street!), visiting the Great Saint Martin Church, the City Hall of Cologne and the museums. All these things are beautiful and perfect to do by foot! Speaking of museums… While we were waking in Cologne, we came next to 7 museums! Which is quite a lot for the small walk we did. If you’re a fan of visiting museums, there were many : Museum Ludwig, Romano-Germanic Museum, Museum of Applied Art, The Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Kolumba Museum, The Chocolate Museum (Yes, I’m getting hungry as well) and the Fragrance Museum!

(The Schildersgasse, City Hall, The Fragrance Museum and the Romano-Germanic Museum)

With some drinks, lunch and a beautiful walk, this was all we did on the first day. While we were driving back to our hotel, we had the luck to see a beautiful sunset from in the car (okay, Ief stopped to take a picture).

By booking with the coupon of Libelle, there was a dinner included. We got 4 courses and it was guuuud! We could basically choose our dinner. The quality of the food was amazing! Definitely consider Clostermannshof as your hotel for your trip to Cologne. There was also a little sauna. We tested it shortly and it was okay. A little bit small, but all the facilities for a sauna were present!

On day two, we first went to the modern side of Cologne. This was gorgeous as well! The buildings were designed in a special way and it was quite nice to see the differences with day one.

Oh yeah, did I already mentioned the cold in Cologne? IT WAS FREEZING. I was cold all the time. Even after a hug of Ief or after a hot coffee. Ief was even cold!

(When Ief was filming some stuff, I went so close to the building in the hope that I wouldn’t catch any wind. I was very amused.)

We also went to the botanical gardens. These gardens were a little bit further than the centre, but so beautiful! Too bad for the cold weather, but if you like to be outside in the nature, than you totally have to visit the gardens! Next to the botanical gardens, you can find Kölner Zoo! A nice thing to do with children, or ofcourse without them!

To finish the weekend, we decided to do a boat trip. We found one for only €10,10 (why the 10 cents, we don’t know either). It was very warm on the boat (Hallelujah YES!) and we saw some great hidden gems! The trip lasted an hour and it was possible to buy drinks and snacks on the boat. Definitely worth it!

Our overall experience of Cologne was very good! It's a cosy and colourful city with lots of activities. All the places you can visit were close to each other so you don’t have to walk 20 minutes to get to the next place, which is nice!

We had a nice trip in Cologne and we hope we’ve inspired you to go as well! If you have any more questions about how we arranged our trip, you can always mail us on contract.globewatchers@gmail.com, for more photos, you can visit our Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/globe_watchers) and definitely don’t forget to watch the video of Cologne.

We’re already looking forward to our next trip, which is coming very, very soon!

Auf wiedersehen!
