Globe Watchers in Greece

Bijgewerkt op: 4 jul 2018

Hello reader!

Our first destination has been visited! Did you see our Instagram posts? Then you definitely saw Ief eating his friend. I'll talk about that in a minute!

First things first. Crete is a beautiful destination. Think about sun, sea, Greek food, cosy streets full of activities and flying plates everywhere (that last one might be exaggerated). Our hotel was located in Chania, the second largest city of the Greek island of Crete.

(Note: You need to pronounce the city as 'Gania' not 'Chania'. A little mistake we only made a thousand times).

Let's give you a little summarize of the activities we did:

We visited Chania itself. We walked around in the port, in the little alleys with shops, we went to the lighthouse, made many stops to drink something with a view...

(First photo: It's still not clear for us why 'the penis' is such a symbol for Greece, but Britt obviously needed a photo with it 😏)

We also visited Rethimnon (The city is also called Rethimno, Rethymnon, Réthymnon, Rhíthymnos ...). We did everything by public transport and actually, it went perfectly fine. Okay, we had to check all the busses before we could go somewere, but a lot of tourists take the bus there, so no problem at all! We used the site https://www.e-ktel.com/ to check the busses. The hours on the site were always right during our stay!

As sporty as we are (you can read this with a hint of sarcasm), we walked/climbed the Samaria Gorge. It was a walk of 13 kilometres in the mountains. Are we crazy by doing that? YES. Was it hard? YES. Were the views amazing? DOUBLE YES.

We did the 13 km in 5-6 hours. This included breaks for eating, stopping for filming and resting. When you arrive at the end, there is a boat that brings you back to a big city and there, you can take a bus back to your city.

It was a very hard walk, but definitely worth doing! (Scary thing: when we were in the Gorge, we heard big stones falling down and screams of people. Kinda scary, kinda dangerous.) Are you thinking of climbing the Samaria Gorge yourself and you're not sure how to get there and how to go back? Mail us on contact.globewatchers@gmail.com and we'll give you our journey more detailed!

The day after the Samaria Gorge, we were tired (and that's an understatement). We decided to have a beach day with snorkeling and a lot of food!

On our last day, we did some boattrips! We went on a trip with 'Captain Nick'. A really friendly man that took us to an island nearby. The boat stopped there, he brought all our stuff to the beach, we got high quality snorkeling material and flippers to swim. We stayed on the Island for 2,5 hours (we believe it was longer than that) and we could snorkel around the island!

We saw a bomb from the second world war on the bottom of the sea and we even touched/had an squid on our arm (it was the most disgusting moment of my life). This particular squid was the 'friend' of Ief. As you can see, the friendship didn't survive long...

Britt could even sail the boat herself!

The overall experience? GREECE IS GOOD! There are a lot of opportunities to do something: boat trips, discovering beautiful cities in the neigbourhood, visiting paradise beaches such as Balos Lagoon (we couldn't do that anymore, unfortunately), doing trips in submarines or with horse and carriage...

We even learned some Greek words: Tzatziki, Souvlaki, Gyros, Raki, Mousaka... (Oh wait, that's only food...). Well, then we definitely know that the food was goooood! There are many restaurants with Greek food, but you can also find different flavours there, like the Italian kitchen.

The atmosphere in Greece is really relaxed. Greek people are friendly and always want to help you. We noticed that it was really easy to recognize Greek men. They are OR Greek gods OR small, round men with a moustache (just so you know how to recognize them).

We hope you enjoyed reading about Greece, but most of all: we hope you got inspired to go to Crete yourself! (Did it work?).
